After spending 50 years of her life teaching young minds, MHS English teacher Janice McLaughlin is retiring.

The first six years were spent in Texarkana; the last forty-four working in Magnolia.

When asked how did you know it was time to retire, she replied, “I had watched the number of years that I planned for my goal, and I wanted to travel and spend more time with my family.”

She said what she loved most about her teaching is that she felt as though her “curricular presented a simpler method of teaching complicated grammar, writing, and literature.”

McLaughlin also logged in many hours teaching ACT skills in the summer. She said that time “brought nothing but happiness” to her when students shared their scholarships because their ACT scores had improved.

When asked for any advice for her replacement, she said, “You will enjoy working at MHS. Your associates here are the best.”

She added, “I have learned that teaching is an excellent career for women with a family; it makes it possible to have both.”

Asked about the future, McLaughlin said she plans to “spend more time with my family, read, travel, volunteer, and perhaps write a book.”
