After 42 years in education, Dr. John Mark Oglesby, nicknamed “Dr. O” by students,” has retired from teaching.

He has been the senior literature teacher as well as the head of the English Department at MHS.

Oglesby grew up in New Boston, Texas, and attended Texas A & M in Texarkana for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He then earned his doctoral degree in education at Texas A & M in Commerce, Texas.

Before he came to Magnolia, he taught at Texarkana School District, Texarkana College, and TAMU-Commerce.

He came to Magnolia in 2005 has been teaching for 42 years total and 13 years at Magnolia School District.

Asked about why he chose teaching as a profession, Oglesby said ,” It was by accident really. I liked teaching and the students, so it became my career.”

Oglesby said his decision to retire was so that he could slow down and enjoy being able to hike and walk. He said he also wants to travel while he’s still in good health. He said he plans on traveling more often after retirement and spending  more time with his family and friends. He also noted that he’s excited to read something besides essays and research papers.
