Brains on, buzzers up, and ready to answer. MHS quiz bowl hosted this year’s Southwest Regional Tournament in March. Those attending were Lakeside, White Hall, De Queen, Magnolia, and Watson Chapel, with Camden cancelling at the last minute.

The teams were here to compete for first place at the tournament; however, the teams placing 1st through 4th place are all eligible to attend the state tournament. The top two teams in the state compete in a match televised on AETN where there is a cash prize.

The team from Lakeside placed first; in second place was De Queen. A team member from De Queen, Noah Reed, was named tournament MVP. White Hall came in third. Magnolia placed fourth, with one win out of five matches that day.

Coach McMahan said, “I feel great that we are going to state and that hopefully we can make a comeback. We hope this is the year to reach AETN. I did enjoy hosting the regional tournament here.”

She added, “I know we studied hard, and I hope that the team studies hard to make a comeback at state.”

Ryan Hudgens, team captain, added,” I was very glad to be hosting. It’s where we practice, so we are used to the setting. Also, it’s great that we didn’t have to wake up at 4 in the morning!”

Starters Terrell Paige, Mariah Guevara, Ryan Hudgens, Joey Lewis, and Aaron Henson focus during a math computation.

Mariah Guevara, a starter on the team, said, “Going to state feels incredible! I’m so proud of all the hard work I and the rest of the team have put in to make this an incredible season. We’ve all dedicated a lot of time and effort to studying. I’ve been reading a ton of Shakespearean plays and making about a million flashcards to study. It’s been hard work, but every minute will be worth it if we bring home a trophy.”

The Quiz Bowl team will travel to White Hall for state tournament April 7 where they hope to qualify for the televised match.
