Around 70 students, parents, and teachers showed up for a candlelight vigil to honor the life of Nicholas Jones. Jones, 16 and an MHS sophomore, died March 3 at Children’s Hospital from complications resulting from the flu.

The vigil was student organized. The gathering took place outside Panther stadium March 6, just as the sun was setting.

Terry Sanders, assistant principal, broke the silence and the sadness in the air, saying, “Tonight we are gathered here to honor what has been lost, rather who has been lost.”

Sanders then asked for everyone to bow their heads to have a moment of silence to honor Jones’s memory. After the moment of silence, everyone dispersed into groups and started sharing memories.

“Nick taught me to always stay happy, no matter what you are put through,” said Caroline Rankin, classmate and friend.

Students light a candle for their lost classmate.

“One time after an away game, the band got back really late, and he bought a large sum of my chocolate bars and he started passing them out to other students,” remembered Melanie Martin, fellow band member.

“I learned from Nick to take every day with a smile on your face and always to enjoy the complexity of life,” said Mr. Fowler, MHS history teacher

The testimonials, stories, and tears were proof that he impacted the lives around him — lives that are changed forever.
