The boys’ basketball team ended their season at the 5A State Basketball Tournament in Maumelle March 1 with a heartbreaking loss to the Morrilton Devil Dogs. The Panthers had a big lead through most of the first half, and around halftime led 32-12.

Tyler Brown, senior starter, had shot 3 three-pointers by halftime.

However, things went downhill at the half. Brown was knocked down in the third quarter, injuring his shoulder, but went back in later in the game.  Then Kadyn Roach, junior starter, fouled out, and Morrilton started to catch up.

When the buzzer sounded, the score was tied 51-51, and the game went into overtime. The final score was a 66-55 loss for the Panthers.

Kyle Carver, # 21, said, “It was tough; we were up double digits for most of the game, and we let it slip away. It hurts.”

When interviewed over the radio, Coach Dyun Long said, “These young men have fought hard all year long. We just didn’t get it done tonight.”

He added that “Tyler shot the ball outstanding tonight.”

Brown scored 18 points; Roach scored 13 points. Others adding points were Bredrin Chambliss, 8 points; Braelyn Beasley, 7 points; Mar’Keveon Strickland, 5 points; and Korey Fulton, 2 points.

Coach Long added that after the team lost the first two games of the season, “They pulled themselves up by their own abilities. They did it, and no one else did it for them.”

Speaking to the community, Long said, “Thank you for the support of everyone that has been supporting us this past season.”

The Panthers lose four seniors this year — Brown, Chambliss, Eric Green, and Dondrail Gulley.

Looking to next year, Carver said, “Losing the seniors will be hard, but they taught us a lot throughout the year, so I think we will be fine and make another trip to state next year and hopefully advance further.”
