The Panther baseball team opened their season by beating the Horatio Lions March 1 in the Ralph Gross Memorial Baseball Tournament in Nashville.

The final score was 3-0, but the day was memorable because Halen Sanders, a sophomore pitcher, had 17 strikeouts with one walk.  Adam Pieratt and Octavious Smith scored off Dale Drake’s triple. Drake then scored the third run.

Feeling optimistic, Connor Harrington predicted this year will be a good year: “I feel like we’ll do pretty well; we’ve got a bunch of young talent.” Since two earlier games were cancelled due to rain, Harrington added, “It was the first time actually playing on a baseball field in four weeks. It was good to get back out there and play ball.”

After pitching the first game, Sanders said, “It feels pretty great to go ahead and get it out of the way, so we can refocus our mindset and keep going forward in the tournament.” Sanders added, however, that he was not happy at how the game turned out because the Panthers did not get a lot of hits on the board.

Dale Drake agreed, saying, “I feel like we could’ve gotten more hits, but Halen pitched really well, and that was great.”

Harrington said this year’s team may rely more on the pitching, moreso than the last season had to, but added, “Our pitching could keep us in a lot of the games.”

The Panthers play again Saturday, March 3, at noon in Nashville.
