Imagine running and playing under the scorching sun in 100-degree weather out in an open court. The sound of the tennis balls hitting the racquets echoes, and students shout their scores. That is an everyday thing for MHS tennis team members, whose season got underway last week. This year, the MHS tennis team has three returning seniors — Taylor Bayles, Hunter Nix, and Sarah Nguyen — and three returning underclassmen who were state qualifiers. They are Kevin Zhao, Keith Watson, and Daniel Reyes. The season got underway Aug. 24 in El Dorado, and MHS won overall in singles and doubles. The highlight of the night was the last single match by Daniel Reyes, who made a comeback from losing 1-5 to winning 10-8. Asked what motivated him to keep going, he said, “When I was losing, I looked over to my girlfriend, and I saw that she was really watching me play. I told myself I have to win this, no matter what it takes. She was my motivation!” The next match for the MHS tennis team will be Aug. 28 against Parkers Chapel.
