The new movie The Bye Bye Man, made its debut on Jan. 13, AKA Friday the 13th. Many spectators had very high expectations as they attended the premiere or viewed the film over the long weekend. The movie tells the story of a young couple and a close friend who move into a new, previously abandoned home. They discover a nightstand that reads “don’t say it, don’t think it” inside of the drawer. Upon further investigation, the group then uncovers a paranormal, eerily human entity that listens for his name. The words soon set off an outbreak over the town. No one is safe. Don’t think his name, and never say his name. He will come for you.

As intriguing as the overview seems, do not be fooled. I personally attended the premiere with confidence that the movie would be phenomenal, but I was sadly let down. As a horror movie fanatic, I was very displeased with the content the film provided. Yes, the essential theme and plot was brilliant and original, and the actors were amazingly convincing, and the production was nearly spot-on; but that does not necessarily mean that the movie as a whole was a great one. Many of the graphics and effects seemed almost corny, including the “bye bye man” himself. To further explain, he literally looked like Voldemort…but with a nose. The movie also simply wasn’t scary. Personally, when I attend horror film showings, I expect to be on the verge of tears, and I prepare myself to have nightmares for a week. I know I have watched a good movie when I’m terrified to even drive home because it is dark outside.

In conclusion, I would not recommend wasting your money on The Bye Bye Man, but if you are curious to know what all the fuss is about, you can see for yourself. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Bye Bye Man is rated PG-13 for language, sexual content, and graphic violence. It is not suitable for immature audiences. Parental guidance is strongly recommended for underage viewers.
